A Relaxed Summer Wedding at St George's Church, Crowhurst | Genevieve & Will
Some weddings are years in the planning with elaborate timelines and endless formalities. Others are simply about celebrating love with the people who matter most. Genevieve and Will's wedding at St George's Church in Crowhurst, East Sussex, was firmly the latter—and it couldn't have suited them better.
From the moment I spoke to them (about 6 weeks before the big day!), it was obvious that Genevieve and Will are wonderfully easy-going. They wanted to arrange a day to enjoy every moment with their family and friends, leaving plenty of room for laughter, conversation and the unexpected moments that make a wedding truly memorable…. and a sandwich for Will!
Surrounded by family, they exchanged vows in one of East Sussex's most picturesque village churches before continuing the celebrations under the warm sunshine of a beautiful spring day.
St George's Church, Crowhurst
Nestled in the heart of the Sussex countryside, St George's Church is one of those places that immediately feels timeless. Dating back to the medieval period, much of the church has stood for centuries, with Norman and later medieval architecture telling the story of generations who have worshipped there. The peaceful churchyard and beautiful stone building create a wonderfully romantic setting for a wedding, full of character and history.
Standing proudly beside the church is the famous ancient yew tree, believed to be many hundreds—possibly well over a thousand—years old. Like the church itself, it has quietly witnessed countless weddings, baptisms and village celebrations over the centuries. It's impossible not to pause for a moment and appreciate the history surrounding such a special place.
One of the most personal moments of the day came shortly before the ceremony. Will's father is a campanologist had the privilege of ringing the church bells himself to celebrate his son's marriage. It was a wonderful family occassion and one of those unique touches that made the day so personal. As the joyful peal echoed across the Sussex countryside, guests gathered outside to congratulate the newlyweds with confetti and drinks before we captured a few relaxed portraits around the church grounds.
A Walk Through the Sussex Countryside
Rather than climbing into a fleet of wedding cars, everyone did something much more fitting for the relaxed atmosphere of the day—they simply walked together from the church back to Will's family home.
The route took us through beautiful golden fields, with guests chatting, laughing and enjoying the glorious weather along the way. It felt less like travelling between venues and more like part of the celebration itself. These unscripted moments are exactly why I love documentary wedding photography. Nobody was posing or thinking about the camera—they were simply enjoying being together, and those authentic interactions always make for my favourite photographs.
A Garden Pizza Reception
Back at Will's house, the garden had been transformed into the perfect setting for a relaxed summer reception. Instead of a formal wedding breakfast, guests gathered outdoors to enjoy freshly made pizzas, drinks and great company under clear blue skies. Teh pizzas were cooked fresh on site by the amazing Monte Forte.
It was the perfect reflection of Genevieve and Will's personalities. There was no pressure, no unnecessary fuss—just good food, wonderful people and a celebration that felt completely true to them. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming and full of genuine happiness, proving that you don't need an extravagant venue to create an unforgettable wedding day.
A Wedding Full of Heart
Genevieve and Will's wedding was a reminder that the most memorable celebrations are often the simplest. A beautiful historic church, the sound of church bells rung by the groom's own father, a walk through the Sussex countryside and a relaxed garden reception with family and friends combined to create a day that was effortlessly elegant and full of personality.
